Liga MX: More opportunities to come for youngsters in Apertura 2018
The Liga MX has worked as a feeder league to European teams thanks to institutions like Atlas, Chivas de Guadalajara and Pachuca. However, not every team in the league invests heavily in youth academies like these organizations and the Liga MX has now taken initiative for this issue.
In the Apertura 2018, teams in the Liga MX will need to give 765 minutes of play to players born in 1997 or after. It is still unclear if a penalty will be enforced to teams that fail to give the minutes to the youngsters, but a possible punishment could be a point deduction.
A similar rule was enforced from 2005-2011 and helped give opportunities to players like “Chicharito” Hernandez and should now help the development of other talented youngsters.
Teams like Pachuca, Atlas, Santos Laguna and Chivas should not struggle with this rule as those franchises have already incorporated younger players into their squads. However, several other teams in the league including top teams like Monterrey, Toluca and Tigres UANL may struggle.
The rule should make a significant impact in the league and the minutes will increase to 1000 minutes in the Clausura 2019 for players born in 1998 or after.
