Liga MX: Five players to watch in the Clausura 2018 final
The first-leg of the Clausura 2018 final between Santos Laguna and Toluca will be disputed at the Estadio TSM Corona this Thursday, May 17. The Liga MX final should be an intense encounter and there will be a plethora of players to watch out for on both sides, but for now here is five to keep an eye on.
“Osvaldito” scored just one goal during the Clausura 2018 regular season, but has already scored twice in the playoffs. The Paraguayan midfielder also had six assists during the regular season and is the main playmaker in Santos Laguna’s attack. Martinez has become one of the top playmakers in the league since joining Los Guerreros last year and is now seeking his first title with the team.

Toluca really struggled to find a prolific goalscorer during the regular season, but Fernando Uribe has really stepped it up in the playoffs. The Colombian striker scored just four goals in the regular season, but now has five goals in the playoffs. Uribe scored a hat-trick in his last game against Club Tijuana in the semifinals and is easily the hottest player heading into the final.
Jose Juan Vazquez
“Gallito” has received plenty of attention recently as many fans and media felt that he should have been included in the 2018 World Cup provisional squad for Mexico. Vazquez missed out on playing in his second World Cup, but is now in search of his fourth Liga MX title. The 30-year-old midfielder was arguably the best signing in the Liga MX this season as he has established order in Santos Laguna’s midfield. “Gallito” is not a traditional defensive midfielder, but plays more of a Claude Makelele role and never stops once the initial whistle sounds.
It is an understatement to say that Rubens Sambueza is an entertaining player to watch and also to say that he has been one of Toluca’s most vital players this season. The Argentine midfielder is a leader on the pitch, who can be as creative as Andres Iniesta and as tenacious as Joey Barton. The perfect way to describe him would be as an Argentine Cuauhtemoc Blanco, always on the prowl for a goal contribution or a red card. Sambueza has a plethora of experience in high-stakes games and should be key in this final regardless of the final result.

The Cape Verdean forward was the Clausura 2018 top scorer with 14 goals and now has a goal in the playoffs as well. Djaniny is pure power mixed with a touch of class on the sphere that can be deadly to any Liga MX defense. The 27-year-old has always had the talent, but was missing the ambition that was finally showcased this season. There seems to be nothing that can stop Tavares this season and he will surely be motivated to score some goals in the final.
