Liga MX: Pedro Caixinha confirms “Gullit” Pena will not return to Cruz Azul
Carlos “Gullit” Pena has been on a downward decline since leaving Leon in his first stint with the team back in 2015. The Mexican midfielder was set to be a star signing for Chivas de Guadalajara in 2016, but instead was one of the worst signings in franchise history.
“Gullit” is still disliked by several Chivas’ fans to this day as he has received jeers and boos when playing in Guadalajara. Pedro Caixinha still saw the potential in Pena that made him one of the best midfielders in Mexico at one point in his career.
The Portuguese manager brought him on to play for Scottish team Rangers in 2017, before taking him along to his next project in Mexico City with Cruz Azul.
At one point this season, Caixinha clearly showed that he was done with “Gullit” as he said that the Mexican player had not repaid him for giving him opportunities with Rangers and Cruz Azul.

This Wednesday, May 9, the European manager set it in stone and declared that Pena would not return to Cruz Azul next season. Caixinha said, “Carlos (Pena) will not continue with us, he was informed by me personally.”
Pena played in eight games with Cruz Azul this season, had no goals or assists and inclusively averaged less than a shot per game. It will be interesting to see if “Gullit” can find another team that will take a risk on him in the Liga MX, but more likely than not he will feature in another league after the World Cup.
