Liga MX: Nico Castillo displays poor sportsmanship after loss to Club America with jab at Miguel Herrera
The Clausura 2018 quarterfinals matchup between Club America and Pumas UNAM was decided in the first-leg. Las Aguilas defeated the university side 4-1 and it was virtually impossible for Los Felinos to construct a comeback in the second-leg at the Estadio Azteca.
Club America embarrassed Pumas UNAM in the second-leg once again with a 2-1 win, making the aggregate score 6-2. The game turned ugly quickly as Marcelo Diaz was booted from the game for lashing out against referee Marco Antonio Ortiz.
Ortiz became the scapegoat for Pumas’ players to shift the focus of their lackluster performance to the officiating in the second-leg. Nicolas Castillo did receive a controversial red card in the 69th minute, and David Patino was left with nine players on the pitch when the final whistle blew.
However, nor Castillo nor Leonel Messi could have turned this series around as it had been decided in the first-leg at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario. Several of Pumas’ players lacked professionalism with their statements to the media but no one was more outrageous than Nico Castillo.

The Chilean striker shouted “Piojo, they should just give you the cup” as he walked past the media at the Estadio Azteca. Castillo did not discuss his statement but it is clearly a jab at Club America manager Miguel Herrera implying that the referees are in his and America’s favor.
The statement severely lacked sportsmanship and logical thinking as Pumas UNAM were obliterated by Club America in this series. At no point in the series did the university side look like a team that could advance to the semifinals of the competition. Pumas UNAM lost because of its play and the officiating ultimately played a minuscule role in the result.
