Six Mexican goalscorers in Week 9 of Liga MX Clausura 2018
After nine games in the Liga MX Clausura 2018, Djaniny Tavares is still leading the top scorer’s table with 11 goals. There are only two Mexican-born players within the top 10 goalscorers in the Liga MX and in Week 9 only six of the 20 goals scored over the weekend were by native players. Here is a rundown of those six goals with some highlights included as well.
Jose Daniel Guerrero
“Chepe” Guerrero scored his first goal in Liga MX since the Clausura 2016 when he played for Club America. The Mexican midfielder rifled a shot from outside of the box that somehow found the back of Marcelo Barovero’s net that helped Puebla get a 1-1 draw against Necaxa.

Guerrero’s goal in that game between Puebla and Necaxa came in the 79th minute and it seemed like Los Camoteros had the win sealed. Martin Barragan spoiled the party for the home team as he scored a tremendous goal in the 90th minute that helped Los Rayos get the point from the encounter. Barragan’s goal was an impressive one and arguably the best of the weekend as he struck a potent strike from about 30 yards out.
Lobos BUAP achieved a huge 5-0 win against Veracruz this past weekend and two Mexican-born goalscorers made their way onto the scoresheet. Diego Jimenez scored his first goal of the season and the third goal for La Manada in this match. The 29-year-old striker showcased his speed and burst past Veracruz’s defense and chipped the ball over Meliton Hernandez to score the goal.

The Mexican striker scored the fourth goal of the game for Lobos BUAP in the 83rd minute of the match. Carlos Trevino provided a perfect cross that found Amione inside of the box that headed it past Meliton Hernandez for his second goal of the season.
Pumas UNAM and Chivas de Guadalajara had a 1-1 draw this past Sunday and Oswaldo Alanis provided the lone goal for Los Rojiblancos. The Mexican defender’s goal came from the penalty spot to tie the match in the 68th minute but he also went on to miss a penalty later in the encounter.

One of the more bizarre goals scored this weekend came by Jesus Isijara in Santos Laguna’s 2-0 win against Cruz Azul. The Mexican midfielder crossed the ball into the penalty area from the left wing, no one got to the ball and it somehow ended up in the back of the net.
