Three games to watch in Week 9 of the Liga MX Clausura 2018
Week 9 of the Liga MX Clausura 2018 will feature some potentially exciting and entertaining matchups. Very few encounters this weekend seem to have a clear winner, here are three games to watch in the Liga MX this weekend.
Puebla vs Necaxa – Friday, February 23 (7:00 PM PST/ 9:00 PM CT/ 10:00 PM EST)
Before the season started this might have been a game many fans would want to have avoided watching. Puebla and Necaxa were relegation candidates nearly a year ago but now seem like potential dark horse playoff candidates this season. Puebla has been one of the more enticing teams to watch this year with Enrique Meza’s ordered, precise and upbeat style of play. La Franja has several thrilling players in the attack like Francisco Acuna, Christian Marrugo and Lucas Cavallini. The team is yet to lose at the Estadio Cuauhtemoc in four games this season and has inclusively only allowed one goal in these games.
Necaxa is undefeated in its last five games and is coming off a very surprising 3-0 win against Monterrey. Los Rayos also have some exciting players in the attack like Carlos Gonzalez, Roberto Alvarado, Dieter Villalpando and Victor Davila. Gonzalez has been the standout as he currently has six goals this season and has been one of the better strikers the league has to offer. Ignacio Ambriz also keeps an ordered side, especially in the defense, which can be very tricky to break down for any team.
Lobos BUAP vs Veracruz – Saturday, February 24 (3:00 PM PST/ 5:00 PM CT/ 6:00 PM EST)
Intense is an understatement when describing how the game between Lobos BUAP and Veracruz will be this Saturday. Both teams are the prime relegation candidates this season and should provide an exciting and hard-fought match in Puebla. Lobos BUAP is one of the more entertaining teams in the Liga MX with Rafael Puente Jr.’s aggressive and offensive style of play. The team has some talented players like Julian Quinones, Gabriel Cortes and Irven Avila but can struggle defensively because of its tactics. La Manada only has five points in the Clausura 2018 and is in dire need of points from this game.
Veracruz offered free transportation to this game to its fans to ensure that there would be support for the team in this crucial encounter. Los Tiburones had an impressive 1-1 draw against Club America last week but lost star goalkeeper Pedro Gallese in the process. The team has been decent and has pulled off some surprising results like that 1-1 tie against Las Aguilas and a 2-1 win against Pumas UNAM in Mexico City. Veracruz has some solid players like Christian Ramos, Carlos Esquivel, Daniel Villalva, and Diego Chavez and has a very precise manager in Guillermo Vazquez. The game will be a battle of two very distinct styles of play and will have a lot riding on it with the race to evade relegation.

Pumas UNAM vs Chivas de Guadalajara – Sunday, February 25 (10:00 AM PST/ 12:00 PM CT/ 1:00 PM EST)
Any game between two of the “Big Four” teams in Mexico is always one to watch even if this can prove to be a lop-sided duel. Pumas UNAM has lost its last two games but has had a very solid season so far, currently in third place with 14 points. Los Capitalinos made some changes this offseason that have paid off, most notably signing Matias Alustiza from Atlas. Alustiza has created a masterful partnership with Nicolas Castillo as the pair has combined for eight goals this season. Pumas will be without David Cabrera as he picked up a red card in the Mexico City team’s last game. Los Felinos still count with a team that is exceeding expectations and should be able to pick up a win in this clash.
Chivas de Guadalajara has been one of the worst teams this season, currently in 16th place with six points. Los Rojiblancos still have the core of players that won the Clausura 2017 title but have not been able to recreate that magic in the past two tournaments. Chivas have not won in their last five games and were lucky to come away with a draw against Pachuca last weekend. Alan Pulido has been one of the more notable players on the team with four goals so far and will be one of the players to watch in this encounter. This should be an interesting match between two of the most popular teams in Mexican football and definitely one to watch this weekend.
