Five players to watch in Week 9 of the Liga MX Clausura 2018
The Liga MX Clausura 2018 is starting to take shape and the key players and teams are starting to emerge after eight rounds of play. There should be some very entertaining and intense games in Week 9 of the competition and here are five players to keep an eye on in the Liga MX this weekend.
One of the more under the radar matchups this weekend is the game between Puebla and Necaxa at the Estadio Cuauhtemoc this Friday. Both teams are going into the encounter in spectacular form and should provide an exciting match. Francisco Acuna has been having a breakout season for Puebla this year and recently scored the game-tying goal in Puebla’s 1-1 draw with Cruz Azul in Mexico City. The Mexican winger is a very quick and skillful player with a lot of stamina that is always fun to watch.
Djaniny Tavares has been stealing the show in the Liga MX this season but Carlos Gonzalez has also been exceeding expectations massively with Necaxa. The Paraguayan striker has six goals in this Clausura 2018 and scored a brace to lead Los Rayos to a 3-0 win against Monterrey last week. The team from Aguascalientes will have a tough task in Puebla but if Gonzalez can stay consistent with his form, Necaxa can come away with the three points from the match.
“Ponchito” has been having a breakout season with Monterrey currently with four goals this season. The Mexican midfielder will be heading back to where his career started, the Estadio Jalisco and will be facing his former team Atlas. The 23-year-old played with Los Rojinegros from 2012-2016 and was hyped up as the next big Mexican prospect. He never quite lived up to the hype but is now excelling with Los Rayados. It always seems that in the Liga MX, players seem to do well against their former teams making “Ponchito” one of the players to watch this weekend.

One of the biggest games this weekend will be the clash between Lobos BUAP and Veracruz as both teams are trying to evade relegation this season. Pedro Gallese suffered a knee injury in Veracruz’s last game against Club America and will now be out for six weeks. Meliton Hernandez took over in that game against Las Aguilas and proved to be a key player that helped Los Tiburones achieve a surprising 1-1 draw against the Mexico City team. Meliton will now have to shine again as his team will play one of their most important games this year.
Puch is currently one of the most in-form players in the Liga MX as he has scored four goals in Queretaro’s last three league games. The Chilean forward had a very disappointing season with Pachuca in the Apertura 2017 and is now regaining his form that made him a star in the league with Necaxa. Los Gallos Blancos will face a very beatable Toluca team and Edson Puch should have a chance to shine this Saturday.
