Liga MX Clausura 2018 Week 7: Santos Laguna vs Leon Match Preview February 14, 2018
Santos Laguna will host Leon at the Estadio Corona TSM this Wednesday, February 14, 2018 (5:00 PM Pacific) for a game in the seventh round of matches in the Liga MX Clausura 2018. Both teams are very intriguing sides that may push for playoff spots at the end of the regular season in the Liga MX and should produce a highly entertaining clash.
Santos Laguna has been one of the better teams in this Clausura 2018, currently sitting in fourth place with 11 points. Los Guerreros are coming off a dominant 2-0 win against Chivas de Guadalajara and are undefeated in their last four league games. Djaniny Tavares has clearly been the standout on Robert Siboldi’s team as he has scored seven of Santos’ nine goals this season. The Cape Verdean forward is having the best season of his career and will be one of the players to watch in this match.
Julio Furch managed to score his first goal in this Clausura 2018 against Chivas and his physical presence could also play a role in this match. Santos Laguna has a well-balanced team with a very solid attack and midfield and one of the best centre-back partnerships in the league in Nestor Araujo and Carlos Izquierdoz.

Leon should have a tough time breaking down Santos’ backline and should have a tough game overall in Torreon. Los Esmeraldas are coming off a 2-1 win against Puebla but suffered two embarrassing losses before that win. La Fiera fell 5-1 to Monterrey at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer in Week 5 of the competition and suffered a 4-0 loss against Necaxa at home before that. Leon is currently in sixth place with 10 points and does have a talented side with players like Mauro Boselli and Elias Hernandez but will suffer the loss of Alexander Mejia for this game.
The defensive midfielder picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in that game against Puebla and will be a significant loss for La Fiera. It is unclear as to who will replace Mejia in Leon’s starting lineup as Gustavo Diaz may have to change formations and start a more offensive player like Hernan Burbano or Giles Barnes. Landon Donovan is unlikely to get a start in this match but could get some minutes off the bench after making his Liga MX debut against Puebla. The American clearly still needs to adapt to his new surroundings and the highly competitive Liga MX and the only way to do so will be to receive more playing time.
The game should be very entertaining between two teams that are in the playoff mix in this Clausura 2018. Santos Laguna is currently in better form and will have the home-field advantage, which should lead to a win for the team from Torreon.
