Three Liga MX matches to keep an eye on in Week 5 of the Clausura 2018
The fifth Jornada of action in the Liga MX Clausura 2018 will feature some very contested matches that should prove to be highly entertaining. None of the games except for the clash between Club America and Lobos BUAP have a very clear winner and here are three matches to watch this weekend in the Liga MX.
Puebla vs Chivas de Guadalajara
Two very distinct sides living very different moments with very different managers in charge of the teams. Puebla is the epitome of order in the Liga MX led by the very experienced manager Enrique Meza and seems to be on the rise. Chivas is characterized by its high pressing and exciting style of play brought forth by Argentine manager Matias Almeyda. Puebla has players like Francisco Acuna and Omar Fernandez that lead the attack while Chivas has the likes of Rodolfo Pizarro and Ronaldo Cisneros. La Franja seems to be a team on the rise with Enrique Meza’s tactics while El Rebano Sagrado has been on the downfall since winning the Clausura 2017 title.
Puebla is coming off a rough 2-0 loss against Club Tijuana away from home but is currently undefeated at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc and should give a valiant fight to Chivas in this game. Chivas is also coming off a loss, against Monterrey and currently only has four points from four games. Los Rojiblancos’ lone win came against Necaxa in Week 3 while Puebla has enjoyed wins against Tigres UANL and rivals Veracruz. This has potential to be one of the more exciting games this weekend as both teams really implement an enticing style of play that should show throughout the encounter.

Queretaro vs Veracruz
Both teams are currently where no team in the Liga MX wants to be, in the fight to evade relegation. One team from the Liga MX will fall into the Ascenso MX after this season and it could be Queretaro or Veracruz. There is currently a 10-point gap between the teams on the relegation table with Los Gallos Blancos having the upper hand. That seems like quite a marginal difference but it is the Liga MX and at the end of the season the three points from this game could make a world of difference. Neither team is off to a great start as Queretaro only has four points while Veracruz only has half of that.
Guillermo Vazquez has been trying out distinct tactics with Los Tiburones, like using defensive midfielder Diego Chavez as a striker. This worked in Los Escualos’ last match as Veracruz achieved a 1-1 draw against a very talented Santos Laguna side. Queretaro did not endure the same fate, coming off a 1-0 loss versus Monarcas Morelia away from home. This could prove to be one of the more intense matches in the Liga MX this weekend as both Guillermo Vazquez and Luis Fernando Tena understand the importance of the encounter.
Pumas UNAM vs Tigres UANL
The Super Bowl will not be the only big game on Sunday as Pumas UNAM will host Tigres UANL at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario. Both teams are currently in the top eight in the Liga MX and seem like strong playoff candidates, at the end of the regular season. The managerial matchup will be very intriguing as it will be between two men that left their mark on Pumas UNAM as players, David Patino and Ricardo Ferretti. “El Tuca” also left his mark in Ciudad Universitaria as a manager while Patino is off to a promising start this season.
The match will also feature two of the most dangerous and talented strikers in the Liga MX in Andre-Pierre Gignac and Nicolas Castillo. Tigres still has the much better squad heading into the match but Pumas will count with the massive home-field advantage. Los Regios are coming off a 3-2 win from Pachuca while Los Capitalinos had a 1-1 draw against Lobos BUAP last week but both teams should provide an entertaining duel in Mexico City.
