The deal that had been anticipated in this January transfer window finally came as FC Barcelona officially announced the signing of 23-year-old Colombian centre-back Yerry Mina. The transaction from Palmeiras to Blaugrana is a permanent deal worth 11.8 million euros with a termination fee of 100 million euros and Mina’s contract is set to expire on June 30, 2023.
Mina began his professional career in 2013 with Deportivo Pasto in his native Colombia before making a big move to Santa Fe in 2014. The Guachene, Colombia native had major success with the team from Bogota winning three titles, including the 2016 Copa Sudamericana.
Mina then made his move to Palmeiras in 2016, where he enjoyed a league title in his debut season. The 23-year-old has an immense physical presence standing in at 6-foot-5 with great ball recovery skills but is also decent at passing and going forward. Mina is deadly in the air and is a massive threat on set-pieces that can greatly benefit the team from Catalonia.
The young talent is now a consistent starter for the Colombia national team and has scored three goals in just nine appearances. The Colombian defender is also characterized by his joyful attitude and festive goal celebrations.
This is a great move for the youngster ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and will also surely benefit Barcelona with an aging Javier Mascherano out of the door and Samuel Umtiti just coming back from injury.
