Five Ecuadorian players featured in games across Mexico’s top-flight league in the opening round of the Clausura 2018 edition of the competition. Four of the five players received starts, two scored and one player even made his Liga MX debut, here is a rundown of how these five Ecuadorian players fared.
“Superman” played all 90 minutes and scored the lone goal for Tigres UANL in their surprising 2-1 loss against Puebla. In the previous season, Tigres UANL had defeated Puebla by a score of 5-0 with a hat-trick from Valencia in that game. This was a very distinct performance from that previous encounter, Valencia was not particularly amazing but took advantage of an error by Moises Munoz to score his first of the year.

The Guayaquil native started for Pedro Caixinha in Cruz Azul’s scoreless draw against Club Tijuana. La Maquina had a few chances throughout the game but failed to capitalize on any to start off the new season. Mena did not contribute much in his playing time with just nine accurate passes, no dribbles and a shot on target.
In that same game, Miler Bolanos received the start for Club Tijuana and he also could not generate much going forward. The Xolos had very few scoring opportunities in the match and Bolanos finished the game with two key passes, two accurate long balls and was inclusively fouled four times.

“El Loco” made his Liga MX debut on Sunday for Lobos BUAP against Santos Laguna and was very impressive. Cortez came on as a substitute for Rafael Puente Jr. at the start of the second half when his team was already down 3-1. Just three minutes after he came in the Esmeraldas, Ecuador native had a spectacular one-timer just ahead of the half-moon to make it a 3-2 game. Cortez had a dream debut in the Liga MX with that goal but his team did end up taking a rough 4-2 loss.
Ibarra received 84 minutes of play in Club America’s slim 1-0n win against Queretaro away from home. The 26-year-old winger was involved in the play throughout the encounter as he was fouled five times by the opposition. Ibarra finished the game with three successful dribbles, two key passes, four accurate crosses, and eight of 11 duels won.
